one student's questions about the midterm etc

--How much material will the test cover? (As in, how far: We haven't gotten to the new chaplet you sent out this weekend; will we be responsible for any of this material?)

actually we have gotten to some of that material. i've been explaining the difference between phonemes and phones so we can talk about phonology problems, and we've covered natural classes to this end, as well. i've also tried to talk about some of the phonological processes you know intuitively, such as the 'eh' to 'ih' pen to pin process in mid and southwest U.S. dialects. [-NORTH, -EAST] as well as the 4 allophones of /t/ that i presented in class last week.

--Will you post the answers to the translation exercises on p. 50 (IPA --> Engl), p. 52&53 (Enlg --> IPA), and p. 54 (multiple choice q's)?

yes ma'm. i just mailed them to the class.

--When I've been writing words in the IPA, I've noticed that I may pronounce words differently than the 'standard' way. What happens if our own idiosyncratic pronunciation of a word causes us to write it wrong in the IPA?

didn't i write about this in the chaplet? yeah, check the 10 commandments, p. 64, commandment 8
